Plot

At the backdrop of the covid-19 pandemic, Aay takes us to the hectic urban town of Hyderabad to the life of a software worker called Karthik (Narne Nithiin). To Karthik, who is coming back to his home town Amalapuram like many others to work comfortably within his close family setup, lockdown has come to hit his personal space.

Karthik is confronted with issues in the mold of misunderstanding and family dysfunction, and with half as much charm as heart, Karthik in a bid to make his case tries to show that even in the most turbulent of moments, love will always have its way.

Direction

The director, Anji Kanchipalli, can only be credited with producing the you-are-there romantic comedy that comes out as warm and familiar and not filled with too many cliche. Instead of exaggerating situations to get a good laugh, he makes the account lean and earthy, hold-onto-your-hats episodes of down-to-the-ground disaster that happens to too many, staying at home working, hunkering down with your family and seeking pleasure in the simplest of life.

His direction is unhindered to make the intricacy of the chemistry of his leads the center of attraction and a lot of situational comedies are infused on it that are more fresh and hilarious than even you would anticipate. The brilliant move of Anji Kanchipalli to make a love story happen in the lockdown makes Aay have a unique taste among the regular rom-coms.

Cast

Narne Nithiin is adorable in his casual ways as Karthik and you instantly like him. His description of the typical, 21 st-century software engineer, who has to contend with work-stress and matters of the heart (take a bow, Mr. Chandler), are as down-to-earth and endearing as they come.

Literally shaking with fear as he prepares to practice lines to what to say to Pallavi (struggle that we all as individuals have to endure at some point when we think of that someone special in our lives), or as he attempts to protect himself against an invasion of inquisitive family members or as he attempts to cope with foreign practices, Nithiin is a commoner enough in the role of Karthik that most young men can identify with.

Nayan Sarika can hit the mark and her onscreen presence and demeanor as Pallavi is so accessible. She does not merely have a beautiful face through which the hero is supposed to court her but is just an ordinary individual with her purposes and personality. Her chemistry with Narne Nithiin is natural, this is why the love story of the two people turns out to be so natural and interesting.

Supporting Cast

As much as the romance is driven by the two main characters, the supporting cast is responsible to pushing the sides of the movie with the love of their lives, the intrusive neighbours, the ridiculous relatives, the irritating friends, which carry the outrageousness of the humour, the plot and emotional weight. They spice up Amalapuram, rendering it a dynamic character in its equal measure.

Music

The music is of sublime stature in a romantic comedy and Ram Miriyala provides a soundtrack that is just right to blow away film. The tunes 1,2 are lively and catchy, and fit into the narrative so perfectly you will not stop humming them.

In the process of mellifluous love ballads to thumping paddy-field throbs, the songs brought in by Ram give the movie a soothing low-fi soundness. Even his background score takes the romantic or the comic line, a notch higher, which is a surety in ensuring that the audiences are active on the script till the end, at the sentimental level.

Cinematography

Sameer Kalyani, cinematographer, has created the brilliance of the small town  world. His frames sketch the naive beauty of Amalapuram on the canvas, the lush green paddocks, the narrow lanes of the village and the noisy markets and he turns out to be a good place to start love.

The camerawork used by Kalyani also gives each of the shots a sense of color and life, and the film seems warm and welcomes expanses of light, which fits its laissez-faire atmosphere.

Editing

In the case of any romantic comedy, one needs the edit to be taut to continue the flow and in this regard the editor Kodati Pavan Kalyan does not offer even a moment to lose focus. The transitions between the emotional scenes and humorous comic vignettes are lifelike so that it is difficult to turn our eyes any time during the performance.

Aay never feels less comfortable and runs at a relaxed pace as it only provides the right amount of romance, comedy and drama so that you could enjoy the movie heaps.

Production

The intention of GA2 pictures will always be to produce family entertainers with a modern touch and Aay is very much to the same extent of what we have been aching to do.

The costumes and production design as well as the sets all appear believable and authentic. The producers were shrewd enough not to try and re-create a hyperbolic or ultra-glamorous vision of village life, and Aay is pleasingly real.

Audience Reception

It was a clean change, as Aay Aay, which released on 15 August 2024, was one of the apparent heavy movies. Its simple story presentation, genuine characters, and heart-warming message was well received by the viewers. It also seemed a nostalgic note especially to those who rode the pandemic-induced hijinks of the so-called work-from-home renaissance.

The film has bred a cult-like following among young people, families and romance-comedy lovers who are attracted to its clean comedy and good-looking stars.
