Direction

Kudos to director Mahesh Reddy for churning out a murder mystery which is new as well as engaging. Instead of aping the standard whodunit formulas, he makes this a compelling tale and lets the mystery unravel in its own good time, the suspense accumulating in the most natural way.

Reddy, though, keeps people guessing with canny pacing, lobbing clues just when we need them and letting suspense simmer all the way through the film. He never muddies his plots; they’re complex without being confusing for the viewer. His direction really feels like it takes us, the audience, into the investigation — his camera serves as our eyes and ears, and we feel like we’re trying to solve this along with the film’s characters.

Production

Made by Subhash Nuthalapati under the Peggo Entertainments banner, Atharva has the slickness of a high-budget project, but without going overboard. The production values are good, so that everything from the locations to the look of the picture conveys the seriousness of the tale.

From the creepy crime scenes to the emotionally charged interrogation rooms to the subtle tension behind quiet conversations, everything is real and tight and just right. Peggo Entertainments has given the director freedom to allow the mystery time to breathe but also to produce the tight, focused film he wanted.

Music

A murder mystery is only as good as its background score and Sricharan Pakala does just that. The effect is eerie, but effective; his creepy tracks contribute heavily to the film’s tense atmosphere and keep viewers engaged between the film’s slower-paced scenes.

And through everything, as clues are dispensed, like so much confetti, Pakala’s score—introducing soft, eerie trombone tones with a glare, building toward a crescendo as secrets are dissected—lends a recurring layer of emotion and intrigue. His work never lets us forget that even the silence roars, that each tick of the music intensifies the tension.

Even the songs – minimal, of course, in a caper like this – are in keeping with the tone of the film, a calm minute of reprieve in an emotionally charged overwhelming investigation.

Cinematography

Charan Madhavaneni’s cinematography is a character of its own in Atharva’s suspense world. His meticulous composition, canny lighting and moody color schemes make a space where danger seems palpable even when nothing is happening on-screen.

The low-lit crime scenes, close-ups of anxious faces and wide shots that suggest isolation are all handled masterfully. Madhavaneni’s lens doesn’t just shoot the action, but also the emotions behind every interaction: We can feel when a character is lying, hiding or revealing too much.

Editing

SB Uddhav’s editing is first rate. The movie moves along seamlessly from one scene to the next, allowing you just enough time to digest new information before it sweeps you off to the next clue.

The transitions are so smooth and the suspense is maintained throughout the, shall we say, film. The editing by Uddhav allows Atharva to sustain its sharp warmth in its narrative arc without deviating from it at any point to let viewers either lose interest, or become overwhelmed.

Plot

Karna ( Karthik Raju ) is a keen investigator with an obsession for solving other people’s crimes.

Review

Karthik Raju adds his degree of brightness to the film as Clues Team Investigator keeping the audience glued on to the engaging plot and powerful presentations. He has the kind of range to add depth to a character and keep the audience captivated by its story. With exciting crime themes featured in this movie, there is a lot to look forward to in the soon to come film that is sure to keep you captivated!
