Direction and Writing

Wearing the writer and director cap, Barla Narayana has made a film which is the heartbeart of its name. His writing is tight and his plots have enough twists to hold the interest of even jaded thriller readers. The narrative chugs along at a brisk clip, patiently ratcheting up the suspense while withholding enough to keep you on your toes until the next scene.

And the tension and humor balance in Narayana’s direction also works beautifully. The film is never too heavy or too dark, keeping the ride open to a wider audience that won’t feel overwhelmed. I love that even at the moments of highest tension, they’re sprinkled with some humor or a nifty one-liner, so the movie remains fun.

Production

It is bankrolled by Parupati Srinivas Reddy under SRR Productions. The director has been backed by the production house to get his vision right and make sure the film is a perfect mix of style and substance.”

And though Cheater probably isn’t going to blow up the box office, it makes efficient use of its tools. The sets, costumes, and places are realistic and earthy, not detracting from the story. And the emphasis is still in the right place — on the characters and their head games.

Music

A decent thriller needs appropriate music to keep the tension alive and Arjun Nallagopala provides exactly that. And his background score is a big contributor to create suspense and imparts emotional depth during key scenes.

If it’s a nail-biting chase, an ingenious reveal, or a heart-wrenching confrontation, the music adds emotional weight to every moment. The songs, also, didn’t feel out of place in the story and didn’t force lighter moments in between the high-tension scenes.

Nallagopala’s work ads an extra layer to the movie’s storytelling, all the better for keeping the audience wrapped up tight in the story from the beginning to the end!

Cinematography

The Cheater is also distinguished by its look, courtesy of the man behind the camera, Govind Babu Charla. The cinematography of the series does a good job in defining moods of the scenes, wether it’s an intense confrontation or a devious maneuver in the shadows.

From the money to the hair-do to the lipstick, we’re getting mixed signals of calculated indifference. (How’s that for an impenetrable puzzle?) Lighting, camera angles and shot design do wonders to hold us in the grip of ambiguity mirroring the theme of the movie. Charla’s work means that you feel the stakes visually, not just through dialogue and plot.

Review

Cheater will be film par excellence that will captivate the imagination of its audience. It’s a depiction of ambition, family and society, while following an epic search for truth.
