Plot
It is set in the serene, though politically influenced village of Purushattapalli where the village committee runs the show.
At the core of the dispute is not just power but also respect, ambition and the fissure between tradition and modern thinking. The film tells how friendships are tested, families torn apart and political alliances prove to be as shifting as sand as neither side is willing to back down.
Direction
Helmed by director Yadhu Vamsi, who has succeeded in adding a comic tinge to an otherwise serious subject that deals with local politics with a good mix of humour, emotion and drama. His style of storytelling is organic, avoiding the temptation to over dramatize the situations and allowing the characters to express the conflicts in a very grounded and realistic way.
And that’s because he manages to keep the story very earthy, rooted in the soil of Andhra Pradesh, is a part of what makes his direction unique. From the dialects to the mannerisms, the village panchayats to the committee meetings under great banyan trees, it all rings true.
The Cast
The film casts Sandeep Saroj, Yaswanth Pendyala, Eshwar Rachiraju, Trinadh Varma, Prasad Behara, Manikanta Parasu, Lokesh Kumar Parimi, Shyam Kalyan, Raghuvaran, Shiva Kumar Matta, Akshay Srinivas and Raadhya. It also stars Tejaswi Rao, Teena Sravya, Vishika and Shanmukhi Nagumanthri.
Goparaju Ramana provides excellent comic timing and emotional depth, and Sri Lakshmi is trying to keep her bickering family together under mounting pressure.
Music
Anudeep Dev’s music is in perfect sync with the mood of Committee Kurrollu. The music has a good mix of young beats and old folk beats, with catchy numbers and bluesy melody.
Anudeep is able to lend the music as a emotional subtext to the characters’ narrative, particularly with heightened political confrontation during the course of the film.
Cinematography
Raju Edurolu uses the camera as a documenter and takes to the essence of Purushattapalli with sweeping and deep shots of the fertile fields, the narrow village lanes, the bustling committee gatherings.
His cinematography illustrates the beauty of the village in a way that doesn’t romanticize it too much. It is that earthy palette, the natural light, the vibrancy of the village colors that makes the visuals feel warm and welcoming and of the earth to pull the audience into the center of the story.
There are some lovely and memorable scenes set during committee meetings — under the shade of huge village trees.
Editing
Anwar Ali’s cuts see to it, the large ensemble cast notwithstanding, that the film doesn’t drag despite the number of subplots. The pacing of the film never lets the audience fall asleep, always granting time for each characters emotional arc.
Production
Bannered by Pink Elephant Pictures and Shree Radha Damodar Studios and produced by Padmaja Konidela and Jayalakshmi Adapaka, Committee Kurrollu is a film that has taken form with a lot of care.
Well, the producers have clearly spent some money making this world feel earthbound and authentic, eschewing elaborate production design. It will be this suave simplicity that will endear the film to everyone and transport them directly to Purushattapalli.
Themes
The major clash is between the old and new, wisdom versus innovation. The film humanizes both and makes you empathize with the elders as well as the youth.
It delves into the personal, families divided by loyalties, friendships that are tested and young people accomplishing much.
Audience Response
Post it’s theatrical release on 9 August 2024, Committee Kurrollu has clicked well with Telugu audiences and specifically with rural & semi-urban viewers where politics of village genre are pretty common in the day to day lives of people.
Its true-to-life setting, believable characters and honest humor received favorable word of mouth. A small number of viewers liked that it was honest about village politics, without trying to turn it into a full-on political satire, or an unrealistic action romance.
