Story

The movie “Super Mario Bros.” features a pair of Italian-American siblings, Mario and Luigi, who grew up in Brooklyn. The brothers apparently have faced a difficult childhood, particularly with their father, who has not appeared to be close to them.

Mario and Luigi are employed as plumbers and were on the job when they stumble across a warp pipe that brings them to an alternate universe, the Mushroom Kingdom.

In the Mushroom Kingdom, they rescue Princess Peach, its princess who is being held captive by Bowser, the king of the Koopa race. Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach and her kingdom is looking for the brave knight to help rescue her and successfully fight the evil king.

Mario and his brother Luigi must venture into the mysterious Mushroom Kingdom in the quest to rescue their fair Princess, and vanquish the evil Dragon King Koopa.

Review

And the star-studded cast for the upcoming movie based on the game franchise Mario Bros., does justice to the star power of the Mushroom Kingdom. The movie is fueled by a wonderful mix of vibrant 3D animation from Illumination and the Mario Universe designs of Nintendo.

The animation is crisp and full of energy that should hook fans and draw them into Mario Bros. The film is aimed as most directly at Nintendo fans and is bound for huge success among them.

But otherwise, it might not be able to do much more for them. There are quite a few Nintendo nods throughout it, however they detract from the story and the character development the fans want.

It’s a story without much depth or weight or characters and I can see how that might not be for everyone. If you don’t know the Mario world, character relationships and story might seem thin.

The emphasis on stuffing in as many Easter eggs as possible could have been a hit to storytelling, which could negatively affect the movie going experience.

Finally, the best part of the movie is its amazing animation, stunning visual effects and,an all-star cast. But in catering exclusively to its fans, it might have lost the plot when it comes to the characters and the narrative.

Cast & Crew

The long-anticipated animated feature of the Super Mario Bros. games has finally dropped, and it’s got one hell of a voice cast. Popular star Chris Pratt, who has starred in Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, will voice the character Mario – the mustached plumber will finally speak.

The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the wildly successful TV team who did the hit series Teen Titans Go! The man who created the original Mario games, Shigeru Miyamoto, is helping to produce this movie (whaaaat?), so fans are likely to get the same good game brought to life.

Miyamoto is a stickler for detail and works closely with the moviemakers to make sure everything is just right. But that’s not all, as this film also includes a star-studded cast of supporting voice talent.

The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy voices Princess Peach and Jack Black brings his comedic stylings to Bowser, the primary antagonist.

Charlie Day, who has appeared in Horrible Bosses (and its sequel) and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, stars as Luigi, Mario’s brother and sidekick. Seth Rogen, who played roles in comedies This Is the End and Pineapple Express, takes the role of Donkey Kong — yet another well-known character from the Mario games.

Keegan Michael-Key (Key and Peele, Keanu) voices Toad, and is a popular character who remains Mario’s loyal friend no matter what adventures he wraps himself up in.

With an amazing ensemble of voice actors and production team, Super Mario Bros. games can hardly wait to see what this movie has in store for them.
